Nationalmuseum: esposte 400 opere, di cui 70 sculture e molti disegni inediti, dell’artista che lavorò a Roma negli anni 70 del Settecento. A New York in autunno.
Nella primavera e nell’estate del 2026, il Nationalmuseum di Stoccolma (Svezia) presenta una grande mostra sullo scultore e disegnatore Johan Tobias Sergel. Sergel fu una figura centrale nell’arte svedese della fine del XVIII secolo ed è anche considerato uno degli scultori più importanti del suo tempo a livello internazionale.
La mostra “Sergel – Fantasia e realtà” è allestita al quarto piano del Nationalmuseum dal 19 febbraio al 10 agosto 2026.
La mostra offre una panoramica completa della vita e dell’arte di Sergel: dai suoi primi anni a Stoccolma tra il 1750 e il 1760, ai suoi numerosi anni all’estero, soprattutto in Italia negli anni ’70 del Settecento, fino alle commissioni per Re Gustavo III al suo ritorno a Stoccolma. Uno degli obiettivi della mostra è quello di collocare la vita e l’opera di Sergel in un contesto culturale e storico più ampio. Particolare attenzione viene dedicata ai suoi rapporti con importanti personalità culturali e autorità politiche dell’epoca, e la sua carriera è ritratta sullo sfondo della vita a Stoccolma, Roma, Parigi, Londra e Copenaghen del XVIII secolo. Sergel mantenne una vasta rete di contatti internazionali, tra cui i pittori Johann Heinrich Füssli e Nicolai Abildgaard, e la mostra evidenzia l’importanza di questi legami per il suo sviluppo artistico.
Un’attenzione particolare è rivolta ai disegni più personali e privati di Sergel. Ha lasciato un gran numero di opere raffiguranti la vita quotidiana, la famiglia, gli amici e scene erotiche. Sergel disegnava incessantemente e i suoi disegni includono di tutto, dai grandiosi soggetti mitologici alle esuberanti caricature burlesche, fino agli eventi quotidiani a noi tutti familiari. In breve: fantasia e realtà. Immagini che rivelano l’uomo dietro le sculture monumentali: un artista che guardava i suoi contemporanei con acuta intuizione e calore.
Il Nationalmuseum ospita un’ampia collezione di opere di Sergel, che costituisce il fondamento della mostra. Si tratta della mostra più completa mai realizzata su Sergel, sia per numero di manufatti esposti che per varietà di tecniche rappresentate. In totale sono esposte circa 400 opere, di cui circa 70 sculture. Si tratta di un’occasione unica per ammirare gli schizzi in terracotta di Sergel e un numero così elevato di disegni, molti dei quali inediti. Il vibrante neoclassicismo (pre)romantico di Sergel è inoltre inserito in un contesto più chiaro attraverso prestiti di opere rilevanti da parte dei suoi amici artisti provenienti da Gran Bretagna e Danimarca: sculture, disegni e dipinti. La maggior parte di questi non è mai stata esposta in precedenza insieme alle opere di Sergel.
Una versione ridotta della mostra sarà esposta nell’autunno del 2026 alla Morgan Library & Museum di New York. Sarà la prima volta che Sergel sarà oggetto di una mostra monografica negli Stati Uniti.
Parallelamente e parzialmente intersecata, il Nationalmuseum inaugura una mostra di dimensioni ridotte su Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albrecht Couschi, noto anche come Badin, contemporaneo di Sergel (vedi notizia a fianco). La mostra si propone di offrire una comprensione articolata e sfaccettata di come una persona di origine africana sia diventata una figura significativa nella società svedese dell’epoca.
Il Nationalmuseum ha commissionato all’artista Salad Hilowle un nuovo film su Badin, che sarà proiettato in mostra.

The exhibition Sergel – Fantasy and Reality opens at Nationalmuseum on 19 February
In Spring and Summer 2026, Nationalmuseum will present a major exhibition on sculptor and draughtsman Johan Tobias Sergel. Sergel was a central figure in Swedish art during the late 18th century and is also considered one of the most important sculptors of his time on an international scale.
The exhibition offers a comprehensive view of Sergel’s life and art—from his early years in Stockholm in the 1750s and 1760s, through his many years abroad, above all in Italy in the 1770s, to his commissions for King Gustav III upon his return to Stockholm. One of the goals of the exhibition is to place Sergel’s life and work in a broader cultural and historical context. His relationships with leading cultural personalities and political authorities of the time are given significant attention, and his career is portrayed against the backdrop of life in 18th-century Stockholm, Rome, Paris, London and Copenhagen. Sergel maintained an extensive international network, among them the painters Johann Heinrich Füssli and Nicolai Abildgaard, and the exhibition highlights how important these connections were to his artistic development.
A major focus is placed on Sergel’s more personal and private drawings. He left behind a large number of works depicting everyday life, family, friends, and erotic scenes. Sergel drew incessantly, and his drawings include everything from grand mythical subjects to exuberant burlesque caricatures and everyday events familiar to us all. In short: fantasy and reality. Images that reveal the man behind the monumental sculptures: an artist who viewed his contemporaries with both sharp insight and warmth.
Nationalmuseum holds an extensive collection of works by Sergel, which forms the foundation of the exhibition. This is the most comprehensive Sergel exhibition ever, in terms of both the number of artefacts exhibited and the breadth of media represented. There are around 400 works on display in total, of which 70 or so are sculptures. This is a unique opportunity to see Sergel’s terracotta sketches and such a large number of drawings, many of which have never been exhibited before. Sergel’s vibrant (pre)Romantic Neoclassicism is also situated within a clearer context through loans of relevant works by his artist friends from Great Britain and Denmark: sculptures, drawings and paintings. Most of these have never previously been exhibited alongside Sergel’s works.
A smaller version of the exhibition will be shown in autumn 2026 at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. It will mark the first time Sergel has been the subject of a monographic exhibition in the United States.
Running alongside and partially integrated, Nationalmuseum is opening a smaller-scale exhibition about Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albrecht Couschi, also known as Badin, who was contemporary with Sergel. The exhibition seeks to create a nuanced and multifaceted understanding of how a person of African descent rose to become a significant figure in Swedish society of the time. Nationalmuseum has commissioned a new film about Badin by artist Salad Hilowle that will appear in the exhibition.
